Naturopathy
I started my career as a registered nurse in general nursing and obstetrics at Blacktown Hospital. I then worked in oncology and mental health nursing for many years later doing my Bachelor of Science – Nursing and then a Post-Graduate in Nurse Education. My career as a registered nurse; involved experience in women’s health, maternity, general, psychiatric and PTSD nursing, and nurse education. I was a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Unit Manager in mental health.
Simultaneously I began studying Chinese Medicine in Sydney then in Sri Lanka whilst also studying Naturopathy and Herbal Medicine in which I obtained a Masters at UNE. I completed another Masters of Health Science in Acupuncture in 2019. Both Master’s research thesis were on Post Traumatic Stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression.
Naturopathy is a term used to describe the use of several modalities that involve non-invasive and natural treatments, working in harmony with the body’s own healing mechanisms. Naturopaths focus on disease prevention and the influence of the environment, lifestyle, and emotions in a holistic health approach. Naturopathy is suitable for people of all ages, and can alleviate a wide range of conditions. The naturopathy techniques undertaken to treat clients can differ depending on the modalities they’ve studied, as well as their healing philosophy, often involving a range of non-invasive techniques, after taking into consideration a comprehensive health history. It may involve administering naturopathic remedies such as herbal medicines or nutritional supplements to treat and prevent a range of illnesses, offering dietary and nutritional advice to restore balance, assisting with detoxification and disease prevention and eliminating parasites, giving lifestyle advice to promote wellbeing and reduce stress. Depending on the health problem, acupuncture, flower essences and/or herbal medicines can also benefit the emotional aspects of healing. Naturopaths work to enhance detoxification, reduce pain and rebalance the body’s systems, physically and emotionally.
Western Herbal Medicine
We use concentrated liquid forms of herbal medicine known as tincture or cold-percolation extracts. This method does not use heat or concentration which can damage the delicate balance of the phytochemical spectrum of the original herb. 99% of our liquid herbs are sourced from Mediherb founded by my Professor Kerry Bone. It is the leading herbal medicine provider in Australasia. They source quality herbs grown organically and wild-crafted, work with growers and they have the highest quality assurance programs using chromatography, macro and microscopic analysis, high performance thin layer, liquid and gas chromatography. Mediherb prioritizes Australian sources.
Herbal Liquid Benefits:
- Customized formulations for individual formulas
- Better value as a potent dose in a concentrated form
- Versatility as specific liquids can be also used in a variety of formats, including mouthwashes, nasal rinses, sprays and topical applications such as creams
- Flexible dosing for different conditions and requirements
- Great if you can’t swallow tablets
- Enhanced absorption
Traditional Chinese Acupunture
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (TCM) relies on the ancient 2000 year old philosophy and practice of medicine that uses holism as a basis to understand the totality of interconnections between body, soul and nature. It’s doctrine is a complex interplay of all forces that can affecting the individual and has theories of adjustment for imbalances of energy and patterned system inter-plays.
It can involve the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body, moxibustion, cupping, auricular therapy, laser therapy and a multitude of therapeutic approaches where this traditional knowledge is a core principle. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians energy flow will re-balance. Acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management. Acupuncture points are situated in all areas of the body. Sometimes the appropriate points are far removed from the area of your pain.
The needles may be gently stimulated after placement, have heat or mild electrical pulses applied. The most common regime is 4-6 weeks of treatment with one to two treatments per week depending of the length of the illness and personal responsiveness to the treatment.
Iridology
Iridology may be used as an adjunct form of diagnosis if appropriate. Using computerised iris photos we look at the colour and structural changes within the iris according to a very fine detailed map of organ placement constructed over many centuries.
The texture of the iris fibers are significant and can reveal inherited strengths, past attempts at healing and weaknesses. Color changes signify areas of toxins, inflammation and chemical deposits. The texture of the eye represents genetic constitution.
As a practitioner and teacher of iridology for over 35 years I find it gives me great insight (ha!) into the gastro-intestinal system, particularly identification of leaky gut and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It also represents major systems such as blood, lymphatics and system oxygenation. Nature has provided us with an invaluable insight into the vital status of the health of the body by transmitting this information to the eye.
